RSN Founded — Nigeria's Active National Amateur Radio Society

5N0YEN establishes RSN as a fresh, active home for Nigerian amateur radio operators, filling the void left by the inactive NARS. RSN is built on donated equipment, volunteer hours, and a commitment to skills development and public service.

What is Amateur Radio?

Amateur radio (also called "ham radio") is a licensed radio service that allows people to communicate, experiment with radio technology, and support communities — without depending on the internet or mobile networks. It is a global hobby that promotes technical learning, public service, and international friendship.

You don't need to be an engineer or have expensive equipment. Many RSN members started with no experience and a simple radio. If you're curious and want to learn, RSN will help you every step of the way.

Amateur radio operators use special radio frequencies to talk with others locally, nationally, and internationally. It's a hands-on way to learn about technology, make friends, and help your community.

"Across all of Africa, there are only about fifteen thousand licensed amateur radio operators, compared to more than three million worldwide. Nigeria's 5N and 5O prefixes together are linked to roughly 150 call signs in total — set beside a national population of over 230 million. The gap is not a weakness, it is an open door."

Emergency Communications

RSN supports emergency communications preparedness by building trained volunteer capacity and resilient communication practices across Nigeria. When phones and the internet fail, radio keeps communities connected.

Our emergency team trains in coordinated communication support for incidents, public events, and disaster scenarios. Field deployments, message handling, and portable power operation are key parts of our readiness curriculum.

RSN seeks collaboration with public safety, disaster management agencies, and community response stakeholders to build a reliable national volunteer network.

Message Handling & Net Discipline
Learn standard message formats, net control procedures, and traffic handling to operate effectively under pressure.
Field Deployment Basics
Set up portable stations quickly in the field using light, resilient equipment that works when infrastructure is down.
Portable Power & Backup Systems
Solar panels, battery banks, and off-grid power design to maintain communications for days without mains electricity.
Community Partnerships
RSN actively seeks partnerships with local councils, civil defence, and healthcare to pre-position trained operators before emergencies occur.

About the Radio Society of Nigeria

The Radio Society of Nigeria Limited by Guarantee (RSN) promotes amateur radio as a technical hobby, a platform for lifelong learning, and a reliable communications service for communities. RSN is a registered not-for-profit organisation — all fees collected are used solely to cover the costs of growing the community and promoting amateur radio in Nigeria. No funds are distributed to individuals or used for commercial purposes.

RSN is built entirely by volunteers and donations. The society was started in 2026 by 5N0YEN through personal donations of equipment — including our repeater — and countless hours of dedication. Today RSN continues to grow through the generosity of members who donate time, expertise, and resources to build amateur radio in Nigeria.

RSN builds on the legacy of earlier experimenters and the Nigeria Amateur Radio Society (NARS), while aligning with current NCC frameworks to support training, examination preparation, and international cooperation for the next generation of Nigerian hams.

Frequently Asked Questions

New to amateur radio? You are not alone. Here are common questions from beginners, with simple answers to help you get started.

QWhat equipment do I need to start?
You can start with very basic equipment: a handheld VHF/UHF radio, a charger, and a simple antenna. As you grow, you may add an HF radio, power supply, better antennas, and accessories.
QHow much does it cost?
Entry cost can be modest. Many beginners start with a low-cost handheld radio (around ₦75,000) and gradually upgrade. You do not need expensive equipment to begin learning and participating.
QDo I need a technical background to join?
No. You can start as a complete beginner. RSN provides mentoring, training, and practical support so you can learn confidently at your own pace.
QCan I use amateur radio for my business?
No. Amateur radio is a non-commercial service for self-training, intercommunication, technical investigation, and public service — not business communications.
QAm I too old or too young to start?
Amateur radio is open to all ages. Students, working professionals, and retirees all participate and learn at their own pace. Student membership is free for those under 21.
QHow long does it take to get licensed?
With regular study and RSN guidance, many candidates prepare in 10–30 hours depending on level. Exams are offered quarterly. RSN helps you through each step of the process.
QDo I need internet access to use amateur radio?
Not for core radio communication. Amateur radio works over the air directly between stations — which is why it is valuable during outages and emergencies.
QHow can RSN help me get started?
RSN offers beginner guidance, training, mentoring, repeater access, and a friendly community. Don't be shy — reach out and we will help you every step of the way.
